I'm 32 years old, a doctor and a Dad and I think Warhammer 40K is cool. There, I said it.
Having recently passed the biggest (and last) exam of my life, I thought I should look for a hobby that would actually help me to relax, unlike coding which does the exact opposite. I've been a fan of 40K ever since I was a teenager and have collected miniatures on-and-off for a number of years. Often painting a squad or two but then getting distracted by something else and forgetting about it for years again.
Surprisingly, despite knowing about the hobby and owning several miniatures, codices and rule books, I have never ever played a game. Not one. Why is this?
I've been mulling over this for a couple of days now. I think the reason I never played a game at school is that 40K was not seen as cool by my peers. Given that I was hardly the coolest kid on the block when I was a teenager, it's not surprising I kept quiet about my interest. Next up was university. My girlfriend at the time thought it was very odd for a young medical student to be painting "toy soldiers", let alone playing with dice and tape measures. To say she was discouraging would be an understatement. After medical school came professional life, travel and postgraduate exams and not a lot of free time.
The other day I rediscovered the 11th Company podcast and started getting excited about 40K again. Since I have a (largely) unpainted Dark Angels army worth about 1500 points sitting boxed under my bed and a reasonable amount of free time I have decided to actually make a go of this hobby. I posted over on the DakkaDakka forums to gauge the opinion as to whether or not, at my age, I'm too old to learn the game. The response was fantastic. Lots of encouragement and also lots of surprises in that it would seem the average age of a gamer is much older than I had thought. Everybody seemed positive that other players are always willing to teach newcomers. So I've decided that I'm going to paint all of the models I have and then head off to my local Games Workshop store to try and get a game. I may even post some pictures of the army as it comes together.
Wish me luck!
